 This indenture made this twenty ninth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven hundred and seventy Between William Mayes of the County of Halifax of the one part and John Craddock of the County of Amelia of the other part.  We witnesseth that whereas John Mayes by deed bearing date the thirtieth day of October One Thousand seven hundred and sixty-two did sell and convey to the above named John Craddock a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being on the upper side of Flat Creek in the County of Amelia aforesaid containing One Hundred and thirty acres be the same more or less which said land was given to the said John Mayes by the last will and testament of William Mayes my father, dec’d without mentioning to his heirs and assigns and as I the said William Mayes am Heir at Law to the said William Mayes, dec’d and that it has been thought the property of the said land would be vested in me at the death of the said John Mayes – but as I believe it was the true intent and meaning of the said William Mayes, dec’d to have given it to the said John Mayes his heirs and assigns forever and to prevent any further controversy or disputes that may arrive from the title of the aforesaid land and premises I the said William Mayes for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings current money to me in hand paid by the said John Craddock the receipt whereof he the said William Mayes doth hereby acknowledge have granted bargained sold and by these presents doth give grant bargain sell and confirm unto the said John Craddock all his right title property claim or demand to the before mentioned land conveyed by deed bearing date the thirtieth day of October One Thousand seven hundred and sixty two by John Mayes to the said John Craddock to have and to hold the said tract of land and premises and all other the appertenances thereunto belonging unto the said John Craddock and his heir and assigns forever and the said William Mayes doth for himself and his heirs warrant the said land and premises unto the said John Craddock his heirs and assigns forever.  In witness whereof the said William Mayes doth hereunto set his hand and seal the day above written.

 At a court held for Amelia County the 26th day of April 1770.  This indenture was proved by the oaths of Archibald Goode and Daniel Mayes two of the witnesses thereto and at another court held for the said county the 24th day of May following the same was also proved by the oath of James Vaughan.
